Episode 29
Joanne Elphinston

Joanne Elphinston is a Physiotherapist for more than 20 years, writer, innovator, lecturer and educator.

She’s the creator of JEMS (Joanne Elphinston Movement Systems) which aims to enable people of all backgrounds, ages and levels of physical ability to learn the art of working with their body instead of against it, to have confidence in their bodies, and to reclaim and enjoy the activities that matter most to them.

JEMS draws from the fields of biomechanics, motor learning, neuroscience, philosophy  psychology and holistic practices. We talk about her method as well as her book entitled Stability, Sport and Performance Movement:Practical Biomechanics and Systematic Training for Movement Efficacy and Injury Prevention.

Highlights:

  • The Listening Foot - a fundamental tool she uses with her clients to help them reconnect to their feet

  • People get a little caught up over what is correct. Should I breathe in here, should I breathe out there?

  • The diaphragm is so interconnected with the deep abdominals and pelvic floor in maintaining IAP (intra abdominal pressure)

  • Why self awareness and proprioception are important. Unfortunately many people don’t care about it. Even professionals.

  • When pros look at movement. The magic moment to observe is the moment just before the movement happens when you see what that person’s strategy is to stabilize to support the movement.
